What is Manglik Dosha?

Manglik Dosha (also written as Mangal Dosh or Kuja Dosham) arises when Mars — called Mangal in Hindi or Kuja in Sanskrit/Telugu — occupies certain houses in a person's Vedic birth chart (Kundali). According to classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house counted from the Lagna (ascendant), Moon, or Venus, the native is said to have Manglik Dosha.

Mars is considered a planet of energy, aggression, and independence. When placed in relationship-governing houses, classical astrology suggests its intense energy can disrupt marital harmony. However, the degree of impact depends heavily on Mars's sign, its exact degree, aspects, and many cancellation factors.

Which Houses Cause Manglik Dosha?

HouseSignificationWhy It Matters for Marriage
1st House (Lagna)Self, personality, bodyMars in self-house can make the native dominating in partnerships
4th HouseHome, domestic peaceAffects domestic harmony and family life
7th HouseMarriage, partnerDirect house of marriage and spouse
8th HouseLongevity of spouseClassical texts associate this with spouse's health/longevity
12th HouseBed pleasures, expensesRelated to marital happiness and conjugal life

Different astrologers use different reference points. Some calculate Manglik Dosha only from the Lagna; others check from the Moon sign and Venus as well. Our calculator checks all three reference points for a thorough analysis.

Is Manglik Dosha Always Harmful?

No. The severity of Manglik Dosha varies significantly. A large portion of the population (statistically around 30–50% depending on the calculation method) has some form of Manglik Dosha, which itself shows that it cannot be uniformly harmful for all. What matters more is:

Cancellation of Manglik Dosha (Dosha Parihara)

Classical astrology recognises several conditions that can nullify or significantly reduce Manglik Dosha. These are called Dosha Parihara (parihara = remedy/cancellation):

  1. Double Manglik: If both partners have Manglik Dosha, the two doshas are said to cancel each other out. This is the most commonly cited exception in South Indian astrology.
  2. Mars in own sign: Mars in Aries (Mesha) or Scorpio (Vrischika) is considered to partially cancel the dosha.
  3. Mars in exaltation: Mars in Capricorn (Makara) is exalted and behaves positively.
  4. Jupiter's aspect: If Jupiter (Guru) aspects Mars or the 7th house, the malefic effect is greatly reduced.
  5. Mars in Jupiter's sign: Mars in Sagittarius (Dhanu) or Pisces (Meena) is considered benign.
  6. Mars conjunct Moon or Sun: Some traditional texts consider this a cancellation condition.

Important: Manglik Dosha should never be judged in isolation. A qualified astrologer considers the entire horoscope — Lagna, Moon sign, Venus, 7th lord, and Navamsha chart — before drawing any conclusions about marriage compatibility.

Effects of Manglik Dosha

Traditional Vedic texts associate the following with uncorrected Manglik Dosha in the context of marriage:

It is important to note that these are classical textual descriptions. Modern astrologers interpret them more contextually — strong Mars can also give courage, drive, and leadership, which are positive marital qualities when expressed constructively.

Vedic Remedies for Manglik Dosha

Various Vedic traditions prescribe different remedies (upayas) for Manglik Dosha:

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I Manglik if Mars is in the 2nd house?

The standard classical definition includes 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses. The 2nd house is included in some extended interpretations (especially in North Indian tradition), but it is not part of the South Indian standard calculation used in our app.

Can a non-Manglik marry a Manglik?

Yes, many successful marriages occur between Manglik and non-Manglik individuals, especially when dosha cancellation factors are present, when the overall Kundali matching score (Ashta Koota) is high, and when a qualified astrologer recommends remedies.

Is Manglik Dosha permanent?

Manglik Dosha as a natal chart condition does not change. However, its effects are most felt during Mars Dasha (major period) or during transits of Mars over sensitive points. Its influence is considered to reduce after the age of 28–30 years in some traditional views.

Does Manglik Dosha apply to both men and women?

Yes. Manglik Dosha applies equally to male and female horoscopes. In practice, some communities historically placed greater emphasis on checking the bride's chart, but modern Vedic astrologers check both charts equally.
